Hey!
A few days ago my friend has ran into such issue on her macOS computer, where she wasn't able to join any Minecraft server. When tried, the following error appeared:
"Failed to login: The authentication servers are currently down for maintenance."

The same thing happened with all versions (1.8.9 and 1.18) as well as on different clients such as Lunar Client or Badlion Client.

(Also AppStore didn't work (it was a blank window))

The Fix:

In her case, disabling local socks proxy (nobody knows who set it up xd) helped.

Keep in mind, that in this case, the proxy wasn't intended to be enabled. This isn't a solution, if it was intentionally set-up.

#1 Go to network settings and click ADVANCED on the bottom right

#2 Go to Proxies tab and look for any enabled proxies. In her case, it was SOCKS proxy. Unselect it with the checkbox

After clicking OK, it worked just fine.

Why am I posting this you might ask. It's a very personal case where someone has setup the proxy server, which apparently was the cause of MC not working properly.
Well, I posted this because I can 😄

Hope it helped someone!
